auger shell
bee lions (2008) (RRR051)
|
auger shell returns to Rack & Ruin records, with a luscious, unobtrusive, atmospheric EP, entitled "bee lions".
auger shell manages to engulf the listener with sound sculptures, crafted with guitar driven, effect riddled mastery. Seemingly with ease, you will drift into a better, more relaxed place!
The soundscape begins very light and relaxing, with the beautiful "bee lions" (to date, this is still my favourite auger shell track), gradually shifting into darker areas. That being said, this EP is optimistic and hopeful, the dark areas, that auger shell threatens to go into - are perhaps merely a light grey.
auger shells first offering "holdstill ocean" has quietly been racking up the downloads, and I have no doubt that as the word of mouth continues, the same will happen with this release. A true beauty.

Light Aircraft on Fire
Of your beautiful eye dripping blue (2008) (RRR053) |
"Of Your Beautiful Eye Dripping Blue" is the second official EP from Light Aircraft on Fire; the creative off-shoot of the psychedelic alt-folk band Laughing Stock (2004-2006) and the electro-pop project Throwing Toy Pianos Down the Stairs (2001-200?). "Of Your Beautiful Eye Dripping Blue" continues the mostly acoustic sound of first EP "Inventing Words to Make a Headache" , but adds a more obvious psyche-folk influence with the whistles, chimes, sticks and recorder enlivening these colourful songs about lost love, fairytale creatures and the bombing of Hiroshima. It is one of two proposed releases of 2008 in preparation for an official album soon to follow. |

dessktop
kirpi EP (2008) (RRR054) |
Go to Wikipedia and hit the 'random article' button. That's your EP title. Then hit it again, that's the title of the first track on the EP. Again for the second title. And so on.
How such a simple concept, can produce fine results is beyond me. This EP sounds like something you would find Finnish folk troubadours listening to, with it's trickling water, organic textures, and plinky plonky soothing rythms.
Despite the track titles being created in random fashion, the way that this EP flows and gels together, demonstrates how dessktop is able to mould sounds into one, seemingly with relative ease.
The kirpi is a small traditional hand weeding tool. It evolved in India as a multi-purpose gardening implement. The kirpi EP is a beautiful listen, from Florida, and created by multi-talented hands.

Assimilation (2008) (RRR055) |
Artist notes:
This album, entitled Assimilation, is a culmination of my works from the past two years. Tracks that were missing something or just didn't sit right with me were woven into other pieces through various pitch shifting and sampling techniques. Then it was just a matter of getting an order with a nice overall flow. All the tracks are combinations of many various tracks, hence the name. I was trying to allow different musical ideas, most of which were not necessarily meant to be played simultaneously, to co-exist with each other with a small amount of unwanted dissonance. And I believe this is my first finished product to have such a solid underlying theme.
Side note: I would like to mention that 2 very good donationware plug-ins were used in the making of this album - Ellotronix v. 1.04 and E-Phonic tape delay.

Rob Bridgett
Vorticist (2008) (RRR056) |
Rob Bridgett is a busy man, who seemingly eat, sleeps, and dreams music. When he isn't busy allowing Rack & Ruin to put out his archived material for the masses to hear, he is busy creating sound for various console, and PC games, the likes of "Scarface", "World in Conflict", and "Serious Sam: Next encounter". This is another album that we have the great pleasure of releasing.
Opening with "Boneless Chicken", a track which has already received airplay on BBC 3's "Mixing It", the opening tracks show a different side, to what has probably been heard on his earlier Rack & Ruin releases. Heavier on the voicel samples, and drum beats (which continue throughout this uptempo offering), the third track "Wyndham Lewis", even offers vocals, something that has not been heard in earlier releases.
Despite this record seemingly containing more fierce audible layers, it loses none of the atmospheric distant rumblings, that we have come to know and love. Even tracks which are more "in your face", such as the penultimate track Vogg, offer as much going on in the background, than what is immediately apparent.
Once again, Rob Bridgett delivers another wonderful spectrum of sounds.

pontow
Greatest Hits (2006-2008) (RRR057) |
pontow's greatest hits 2006-2008 is a small collection of songs recorded by kyle that he particularly liked. they were made on a 4-track alone in his bedroom and in his bathroom over the course of 2 years. all of the songs were made in a timespan of anywhere between 5 minutes to 3 hours. they're mostly sing-along-cutesy-lo-fi-acoustic-pop songs.
With most tracks hovering around the two and a half minute mark, this bitesized insight into this two year span is a real joy. There is a tone to Kyles voice that is reminiscent of numerous artists on K records, whereas his lo-fi pop is reminiscent of the likes of Pants Yell!
Definitely a summer record.

Narwhal Mountain
If Only (2008) (RRR058) |
San Diego's, Bryan Dale, and his trusty copy of Ableton Live enter the Rack & Ruin discography with a blissful electronic offering. Imagine Jona from YACHT singing Khaela's songs from The Blow, and you will have an idea of what to expect. Musically, these acts are similar, mainly due to Jonas work with The Blow (obviously), however, whereas Jonas solo offering is more hopeful, Khaelas The Blow project offers the upbeat music, whilst singing about despair. Bryan, has this off to a tee.
This upbeat, electronic music fills ones stomach full of warmth and pushing them out upon the dance floor. The orgasmic rhythms will turn heads while the out going vocals will make it a night to remember. Like your first time you will always remember Narwhal Mountain!

Megazord
Prismatic Refraction / Healing Eternity (2008) (RRR060) |
Megazords last release, entitled "FULL SPECTRUM VIBRATIONAL PRISM", only came out last month. But he was quickly back to work, to prepare "Prismatic Refraction/Healing Eternity". Megazords previous release weighed in at 1 hour, and 30 seconds. This release weighs in at dead on the hour mark..... something, that you believe that Megazord had always intended with his previous offering.
Megazords musical goal seems to be to create hypnotic drone in single takes, something he achieves with great results on this release, and going by an earlier conversation I had with Christian Oldham, something that he hopes to continue with for the forseeable future.
When asked what his take was on this release, the response was a string of A's, H's, and M's. Followed by a hurried apology, and then stating "I think that is actually kinda fitting. I've never listened to all of the songs, I just vaguely remember them". It seems crazy, that an artist such as Megazord is able to produce what he produces, with such relative ease. It may be my faded memory coming into play here, but I have a vague recollection which involves him never having picked up an instrument until Rack & Ruin labelmate, Jessi Lively, suggested he made something for the label.
Having already found his way onto various blogs, and various radio stations around the globe, he seems whatever he is doing - is something that hits home with a number of people. Megazord threatens that one day he will buy some "instruments", and use them to see what he comes up with, whatever he does, I'm sure that more abstract experimental sound will surely follow.
